How to "Home Studio" - DAW's (Digital Art Workstation)

The last blog, we talked about recording equipment used for vocal use and the instrument used for home studios. But what would we use to record ourselves or others? Well, the answer to that is simple you would use a DAW(Digital art Workstation). 


When choosing a DAW, you have to understand what you are genuinely going to use it for. You will have to ask yourself, am I a Beat writer? Do I only want to record people? Do I just want to mix and master songs? 


There are many different DAWs out there; Logic Pro X, ProTool, and FL Studios are some of the most popular DAWs out there. Logic pro is more popular with the Beat writers and recording engineers and is my favorite DAW as I feel it is not as complex looking and is one of the easier DAWs to use. Logic Pro comes at the cost of $200.


ProTools is more commonly used by Recording engineers as it is more studio compatible, but there is more than 1 version of ProTools. There is Protools artist, Commonly bought for personal use and essential use, Protools Studio is also used for more professional use in professional music production, and Pro Tools Unlimited is used for large-scale professional music or audio production. ProTools Unlimited is what Most professional studios will have as their main DAW. Unlike most DAWs, Protools requires a Subscription, and depending on which version of Protools you Subscribe to, The price will fluctuate.

 Lastly, FL Studios is the DAW that most Beat writers prefer as it is has a friendly interface easy to navigate with a professional output. I would say if you are more into making beats and making a career out of that, then FL is the way to go. FL Studios, like ProTools, has multiple versions. Fruity, Producer, Signature & All Plugins Edition Ranging the price from as high as $499 to as low as $99 dollars.

When choosing a DAW, always follow what feels best and works best with your workflow. Depending on what you want to do as an Audio Engineer, there are Daw that will work best for you.

    Hi Gio, this is all very interesting stuff. Being a sound engineer is definitely something that is in its world. I can confirm with you that equipment definitely becomes pricey when it has anything to do with the music industry.
